Children from 5 years old will love to get to grips with digital photography with My First Digital Camera and Image Software, from Berchet Multimedia.Bold, bright and made of durable, chunky plastic, this nifty little camera will be safe in even the most enthusiastic wannabe's hands. It can be used independently of its stand to take pictures, as a standard digital camera. Or, when connected via the stand, it will work as a basic WebCam.
The editing software included with the camera offers a graphical menu with links to the "Morphing Workshop", where creative types can add create their own, special effects by bending, stretching, and otherwise distorting images; the "Editing Workshop" where you can crop, flip and generally touch up your pictures; "Framing Workshop" to enhance your works of art; "Portrait Workshop" where you can superimpose your own face on traditional painted portraits; "Live Video" which allows you to stream video via the WebCam; two games (one space, one basketball) which allows you to interact with the games via the interactive bandana included; "Disguise Workshop", where you can add comic features to your images, as well as links to two interactive web sites. Or, alternatively, you can simply download the pictures you've taken earlier.
The pictures aren't the best quality you will have ever seen, but neither are they the worst: this camera is exactly what it claims to be--a great introduction to digital photography and a fun, educational way to get junior children learning via the PC. Simple to install, the camera requires 2 x AA batteries (not included) and can only be used on a PC with a USB port. A comprehensive, clear leaflet gives all the basic information, including how to locate your USB port, and this should be read before starting.
Use of the camera not only develops creative and photographic skills, it encourages social interaction, artistic skills, PC and mouse skills, as well as design, editing and layout skills. It is a safe, controlled way to introduce youngsters to the Digicam, and cheaper than buying one of the "grown up" cameras on the market. A great gift, the manufacturers recommend the camera for 5+, and though the younger end of the age group will undoubtedly need parental help, the pre or early-teens will master it without too much trouble. Kids will love it because it's trendy; parents because it's educational. --Susan Naylor

Speed, style and handling are always important in a car, and the Pedal Audi TT from Berchet has them all and is perfect for the youngster who has it all.The TT measures 1.1m (just over 3.5 feet) in length, and weighs in at 7 kg (about 15lbs). It arrives boxed and the only assembly required is to fit the steering wheel, back spoiler and wing mirrors--all of which screw in easily and safely (full instructions are included). The pedals are the traditional mechanism and will give your children a good work out in the garden. This model was a bit of a stretch for the youngest of our testers (aged three), though they did like the compact style and lightweight handling and soon got the hang of the controls. The optimum age for this model is therefore around three to four years.
The Audi TT was tested on carpet, in a room with other similar cars, and sustained the odd knock and bump; however, the superlative quality of the plastic and trimmings meant it was completely unnoticeable and finished the test drive without one service, looking good as new. Traction was good, and the sleek silver paintwork appealed to boys and girls alike.
As an ultimate gift for a three or four-year-old who's into cars you need not look any further. The car is of the highest quality, is stylish but durable, and exciting but safe. The size and scope of the car means it will probably last at least two or three years in terms of play value and quality. --Lucie Naylor
