Children from the age of eight can escape into the heart of the Indian Jungle when they build LEGO's stylish Scorpion Palace. There will be hours of fun playing with Johnny Thunder as he battles with evil enemies to obtain Marco Polo's hidden treasure, and youngsters can compete with real friends in an exciting Orient Expedition board game that accompanies this set.The Scorpion Palace is set on a green board measuring 38 cm by 13 cm. From the front, two imposing columns support a large white dome. On each side, set further back are thin brown pillars supporting smaller domes. On either side of the entrance, a miniature scorpion welcomes visitors. In the centre, a huge black scorpion with red jewelled eyes jealously protects the treasure chest with two vice-like claws. On the top level lies the golden shield.
The elegant Palace is full of surprises. There is the trap door underneath the golden shield, as well as a clever but simple device that will release a huge boulder into the Palace, should anyone dare try and push aside the claws of the scorpion.
The five Lego characters in the set are Johnny Thunder (an Indiana Jones-like hero), his friend Lord Kilroy, the archenemy Lord Sinister, the evil Maharaja and a guard. There is also a splendid elephant with a jewelled saddle and moveable tilting shade.
Both beginners and LEGO enthusiasts will find the A4 manual with its clear colour diagrams and step-by-step instructions easy to follow. The total set-up time for Orient Expedition 7418 is two to three hours.
This set will continue to delight those that love construction and inventive LEGO building. It will also appeal to those youngsters who enjoy creative role-play, adventure games and competition. --Tracey Hogan.
