The updated LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Invention System 2.0 brings exciting additions that make it a worthwhile purchase, even for owners of edition 1.5.One of the main differences is that the infrared transmitter is now a handy USB device (most PCs have a USB port, but not all: it's always best to check) rather than a serial device, as before. This makes for much easier installation and gives stronger and faster communication between the PC and RCX unit.
Another significant difference is the updated RCX software. It has a number of new modules including a "Pro Challenge" mode which gives you the opportunity to test your skills to the limit in six different challenges. The software is easy to install and fun to use: just put the CD-Rom into you PC's drive and it will start the installation process. When prompted, plug the infrared device into a spare USB port, then--again to a prompt--place the robot (or whatever other vehicle you've built) in front of the infrared device and wait a few seconds for the software to download. You're now ready to go.
You can follow the on-screen instructions for building your own robot (standard LEGO bricks included in the pack) or use the manual but be warned: it can be a bit tricky to identify some of the parts. Allow yourself a couple of hours to build a robot, (the possibilities are endless, particularly if you use other LEGO kits you own). Then program your robot. It really couldn't be simpler as there's a very easy to use "drag-and-drop" interface that allows you to quickly programme your robot and get him doing the things that you desire within seconds. You can test each step along the way, and the graphical interface is fun to use.
LEGO recommended you go through the entire training mission section before starting as this gives some great tips for your robot assembly and it is a lot of fun at the same time. Also included in the CD-ROM are test programs. These give great examples of what is possible, and they also give you the opportunity to deconstruct and change pre-built routines so you can learn by example and test out your own ideas.
Once you have got to grips with this package why not go one step further and give your robot an eye with the LEGO Mindstorms: Vision Command, or add on the LEGO Mindstorms: Ultimate Building Set for extended fun. The RCX will even work in conjunction with the Droid Developer Kit.
In all, this is a fantastic package that gives weeks if not months of great enjoyment for children aged 12 and above, though prior experience of LEGO and good PC literacy are definitely an advantage. --Robert Hyde
