As learning aids go, they don't get much better than the Explorer Globe from LeapFrog. Touch the globe with the electronic pen included and it will spring to life, naming the country or ocean you've touched and giving you one or more of a number of facts--ocean depth (in feet and metres), country capital, population, land area, continent, even music (a rather eclectic mix!). Touch it again, and you'll get another nugget of information. You can choose which information you want on precisely which area of the globe, from: name, capital, population, area, high point, money, music and continents/countries/states. The globe will also compare one place with another and tell you the distance in miles between them, if you touch two points in succession.
But the real potential of the globe lies in its game, "Eureka: a Game of Discovery". Touch the Eureka button, then choose from continents, countries, country capitals, states, state capitals or a free-for-all random round. Set the game going and you must find the points that the globe instructs you to find. You are running against the clock and the instructions and accompanying music become increasingly quicker as you progress. The multi-player option means healthy competition can be introduced and as you progress, you can choose between "tourist", "frequent flyer" and "globetrotter" levels, which become increasingly difficult.
The voice recording on the globe has an American accent but diction is clear and precise and in no way does this detract from the final product. This is a fast, furious and fun way to learn geography, (physical, human, political and economic as well as musical!) and though aimed at children, adults may be surprised at how healthy it is to do a little revision now and again. As well as being an effective learning aid, the globe can be a fun, family game. Simply superb and suitable for children aged 7 to 77! --Lucie Naylor

Produced to be used with My First LeapPad, Pooh's Honey Tree is an interactive story and activity book to reinforce first learning concepts and, above all, make learning fun.The bright, bold illustrations are based on the modern Disney designs, and as youngsters turn each page, they are presented with a new activity or a new page from a story. Using the "magic pen" on the First LeapPad, pre-schoolers are encouraged to match shapes, find opposites, identify colours and shapes, match pairs, identify patterns and much more. When they get to the end of the book, they simply turn it around, and start to read the "Pooh's Honey Tree" story, following it word for word, again with the pen.
Sturdy, wipe-clean and visually appealing, the book is the perfect compliment for youngsters who have mastered the book included with the First LeapPad unit. It brings a fresh, innovative and interactive approach to learning traditional, basic skills with the help of an old favourite--Pooh Bear. Pre-schoolers (the book is aimed at 3+) will love to follow their friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, and won't even know they're learning. Great fun and a lovely way to get pre-readers interested in the written word. --Susan Naylor

Search The City is part of LeapFrog's range of interactive books that are designed to be used with their LeapPad Learning System. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and you're ready to start. This particular title is recommended for children at Stage 3 of the LeapPad library, which is children between eight and 10 years old. The background story linking the learning activities on each page is that of two characters, Tanna and Santo, who arrange to meet when Tanna visits the big city for the first time. Because of the crowds in all the locations they visit (the airport, the museum and the department store being just some of them), they keep missing each other. Santo leaves a note for Tanna at each location indicating where she should go to next.
Each page of the book features a different setting and a choice of two activities, "Search and Find" and "Brain Benders". For the Search and Find task, the recorded voice asks you to locate a particular object or person (for example, the man looking in the mirror who can be seen through one of the apartment windows)--use the special touch-sensitive pen that comes with the LeapPad system to press the appropriate area of the picture. The voice response enthusiastically praises correct answers and offers encouragement if you select an incorrect answer. The Search and Find tasks don't just test observation--reading and lateral thinking skills are also tested with problems such as "Touch the sign beginning with the letter c" or "Touch the sign that includes a word that contains the word land". The "Brain Benders" tasks give you a set time limit (usually 45 seconds) to locate several of the same item, although the child's understanding of the noun used is sometimes also tested, for example, "Find the three musicians in the picture". Maths skills and understanding of the concept of comparisons are also tested. For example, in a picture of a busy street scene, you're asked to compare the prices that two different hog dog vendors are selling their wares for and find the cheapest--is it one for 65 cents or two for 1 dollar and 20 cents?
The highly detailed pictures and requirement for lateral thinking makes Search The City a challenging interactive learning aid--even adult testers have concluded that it's not as easy as it looks. One minor criticism is that the some references such as prices haven't been changed for the British market, although the busy urban setting could just as easily be London as New York. Children familiar with Martin Handford's Where's Wally? series of books may have something of an advantage with the activities, as Search the City follows a similar format. --Alison Drury

Learn to read with Sully and Mike, the top scaring team from hit movie Monsters, Inc. in this fun filled activity storybook designed to work with the LeapPad learning system.Simply slot the book and the special cartridge on to the LeapPad, run the magic pen over the words and fantastic colourful cartoon illustrations and watch as children are encouraged to learn the alphabet with their favourite characters. Fans of the film will know that Sulley and Mike work for Monsters, Inc., a power company with a difference--they generate all their power from children's screams. The storybook follows the scary pair through their bumbling adventure as they find themselves saddled with a human child and they must find a way to put her back in her closet! A great fun concept which will make things that go bump in the night that little bit less scary, even for those who haven't seen the film.
The LeapPad is a remarkable learning system that cleverly combines education with fun, and this book has plenty of opportunities to practice reading, along with varied and challenging quizzes featuring numbers, simple maths and even some early geography. --Rachel Ediss
