Devising fun and interesting ways to make learning enjoyable is not always easy. However, LeapFrog has created a sensational learning system, Little Touch LeapPad. Following on from the success of the LeapPad Learning System and My First LeapPad, Little Touch is designed for babies aged between 6-36 months to foster pleasurable early learning by using brightly coloured, tear-resistant, baby-friendly books with stories that really come to life.Simply by touching the Little Touch book, babies can interact with the learning system, making simple choices as different things catch their eye. Each touch is rewarded with a sound, word or music, (depending on which mode is in use), offering encouragement and reward for continued exploration. As babies progress, they will make surprising discoveries which together will lead to exciting first reading experiences.
In each book there are three learning settings, the first of which is based around "Music and Soundscapes", using rhythms and sounds to stimulate early brain development. The second setting is "Word Play", which features short, descriptive phrases to introduce word/object association and build early language skills. The third setting, "Laugh and Learn", contains fun-filled rhymes and early learning interactions to develop children at pre-school age. The rhymes develop language, introduce the alphabet and letter sounds, colours and shapes, and develop story comprehension skills.
The storybook provided with the Little Touch LeapPad System is "One Bear in the Bedroom", which shows various animals having a wonderful time, and at the same time introducing your child to the concept of counting and number recognition. To enable the book to come to life it has to be snapped into the Little Touch by pressing on the plastic spiral spine, and the story cartridge should be inserted firmly. Next, choose the appropriate level setting, touch "Go" to activate each page and watch as your baby starts to learn. Also provided are activity cards which have simple operating instructions and are intended to be used for independent learning. Once your baby has mastered that, other books are also available for purchase. See Guess How Much I Love You, The Animal Dance and Baby's First Words.
Accompanying Little Touch is an excellent and comprehensive coloured guide and instruction pamphlet that offers simple explanations using straightforward language. Once again, LeapFrog has produced an excellent system that will give hours of enjoyment creating a relaxed learning environment with a structure that children will not notice beneath the fun. --Susan Naylor
The system requires 4 x AA batteries (not included).

Produced to be used with My First LeapPad, Thomas and the School Trip is an interactive story and activity book to reinforce first learning concepts and, above all, make learning fun.The bright illustrations replicate perfectly the Thomas we all know and love from books and the TV, and as youngsters turn each page they are presented with a new activity or a new page from a story. Using the "magic pen" on the First LeapPad, pre-schoolers are encouraged to match shapes, find opposites, identify colours and shapes, match pairs, identify patterns and much more, with Thomas and friends. When they get to the end of the book, they simply turn it around, and start to read the Thomas and the School Trip story, following it word for word, again with the pen.
Sturdy, wipe-clean and visually appealing, the book is the perfect compliment for youngsters who have mastered the book included with the First LeapPad unit. It brings a fresh, innovative and interactive approach to learning traditional, basic skills with the help of a childhood favourite. Pre-schoolers (the book is aimed at children of three years and over) will love to help Percy at the dock, or hurry back with Thomas so he can pick up the children, and they won't even know they're learning. It's all great fun and a lovely way to get pre-readers interested in the written word. --Susan Naylor

Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle is part of LeapFrog's range of interactive books that are designed to be used with their LeapPad Learning System. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and you're ready to start. This particular title is recommended for children at Stage 2 of the LeapPad library, which is children between six and eight years old. The story itself features the popular cartoon character Scooby Doo and his friends and is 55 pages (eight chapters) long, so an ideal length for young readers starting to read by themselves. Viewers of the Scooby Doo TV series won't be surprised to learn that Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle closely follows the same story format. The gang are driving though a dark and stormy night (what else?) when the Mystery Machine gets a puncture. Going to the nearest house for help (which turns out to be the usual spooky Gothic mansion), the gang are invited to stay for supper by the owner, Clift Montgomery (like the actor Montgomery Clift--get it?). It turns out that Clift has recently agreed to donate the house to the local council as a museum. Their fellow dinner guests include various prominent local citizens who all have their objections to the plan. Clift's sudden dramatic disappearance gives the gang a new mystery to solve, although as always Scooby requires bribery in the form of his favourite Scooby Snacks before he'll join in. Naturally, when the villain is eventually unmasked his parting riposte is "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those kids and their pesky dog".
The LeapPad comes with a special touch-sensitive pen--follow the story by using it to touch the words on the page. The story is read aloud by a male American voice--this can sound rather stilted during the dialogue between characters, especially Shaggy and Scooby, who have their own distinctive styles of speaking. Touch the pictures of the main characters on the first page to identify them and learn a little fact about each of them, in the authentic voices from the TV series (who would have guessed that Shaggy's real name is Norville "Shaggy" Roberts?). The music used throughout the story creates a suitably spooky ambience. To hear a short synopsis of each chapter, use the pen to touch the chapter heading. By touching the pictures throughout the story, you will hear some very amusing sound effects (the "wobble" noise when you touch a picture of a jelly and Velma's trademark exclamation of "Jinkies!" when you touch a picture of her are particularly notable). The story contains 120 vocabulary words which are designed to be slightly more challenging (such as "mystery", "nowhere" and "skidded")--these are highlighted throughout the text and repeated in a glossary at the end of the book. Touch any of the glossary words and the recorded voice pronounces it correctly and offers a short definition. Comprehension and memory are tested in the "Haunted Castle Challenge" game, where you're asked questions about the story and use the pen to touch the picture of the appropriate answer.
Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle is an entertaining if slightly predictable tale designed to build reading confidence. Importantly, it also encourages children to think about the meaning of words in context and tests understanding of plot and characters. --Alison Drury

Leap into learning with the stunning LeapPad interactive learning system from LeapFrog, and watch young readers get to grips with reading without even noticing the work. Even the most reluctant of readers will find this system irresistible. The LeapPad includes a nifty software system that combines a "magic" pen with an interactive book designed to help children spell, follow a story and improve their vocabulary and concentration.
Users simply place the book onto the pad, take up the pen and follow the story. They listen to the story being read aloud first, then go over the words again with the pen, choosing whether to say the words, spell them or sound them phonetically. Each element encourages the child to join in, helping to develop an understanding of the sounds each word makes and how the words fit to form a sentence, and then a story. The real fun starts when the pen touches one of the characters: the slightest touch makes them speak and giggle along, adding a further dimension.
Included in the LeapPad reading scheme are: an excerpt from Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, a good starting-point for vocabulary development ; a Winnie the Pooh story, especially designed to build confidence and story-reading skills in young readers; a page dedicated to different parts of the body, where the child is encouraged to identify and then spell out the words; an impressive section about musical instruments and an introduction to foreign languages which involves choosing an everyday activity then choosing to hear the words in French, Spanish, German or Japanese.
You don't have to understand how the technology works; all you need to know is that this is one of the most impressive, yet simplest, reading and learning system you are ever likely to come across, combining some of the most basic elements of learning with some of the most complex. But the real strength of this product is that it is fun. Children will find the interactivity irresistible, and will enjoy hearing sounds and playing the games that are, without them even noticing it, encouraging them to learn some of the most important skills on the road to adulthood. Requires 4 x AA batteries (not included). Ages 4 and up. --Susan Harrison

My First LeapPad is a fun, interactive way to introduce first learning concepts to pre-school children and is aimed at those who are not old enough to appreciate the LeapPad Interactive Reading System.Like the award-winning LeapPad before it, My First LeapPad is based around a software system that combines a "magic" pen with interactive books, in this case aimed at helping children recognise shapes, numbers, colours and first letters and words. The concept is simple enough: clip the "Leap's Big Day" book (included) on top of the First LeapPad, insert the cartridge into the station on its side, and press the green "Go" button. Each page has a different activity: choose from "Counting Farm", "Parts of the Body", "Count and Sing Express" and many, many more.
Visually exciting and very colourful, the illustrations are all self-contained, each centred around a situation that helps reinforce one or other first learning skill. For example, in "Parts of the Body", basic body parts are labelled, and if you press the "game" button, you are invited to press parts of the body while singing along to "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes". You can even choose a different body part for the song, and change the title! In "Leap Hopped on a Train", relatives are tested, as readers are asked to point with the magic pen to the item "under Leap's arm" or the person "standing next to Tad", and so on. When you get to the end, simply turn the book around, and instead of single exercises, you can follow a series of scenarios that together make a full story.
The music is lively, and volume is adjustable. The First LeapPad is bold, chunky and wipe-clean, and all wiring and batteries are well hidden behind screwed-down casing. A handy handle is just right for little fingers, and it even gives you a warning when your batteries are running out.
The "Leap's Big Day" book is also sturdy, made out of durable, wipe-clean cardboard and strong plastic binding. Though the unit is technologically quite complex, the learning principles behind My First LeapPad are traditionally simple, based on repetition, reinforcement and good old-fashioned fun! Parents will probably need to spend time helping and encouraging youngsters as they get to grips with the unit, and the only thing to remember is to press the green "Go" button each time you turn a page.
Recent research has shown that the younger a child is exposed to letters and numbers, the earlier they will begin to learn how to count and write. My First LeapPad is undoubtedly a learning aid that will foster this progression and give your children a helping hand as they set out to learn. The only additional thing you will need is a backpack or bag to store the books, unit and cartridges safely together. --Susan Naylor
Aimed at pre-readers, the manufacturers recommend My First LeapPad for children aged 3 years and above. Requires 4 x AA batteries (not supplied).

Search The City is part of LeapFrog's range of interactive books that are designed to be used with their LeapPad Learning System. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and you're ready to start. This particular title is recommended for children at Stage 3 of the LeapPad library, which is children between eight and 10 years old. The background story linking the learning activities on each page is that of two characters, Tanna and Santo, who arrange to meet when Tanna visits the big city for the first time. Because of the crowds in all the locations they visit (the airport, the museum and the department store being just some of them), they keep missing each other. Santo leaves a note for Tanna at each location indicating where she should go to next.
Each page of the book features a different setting and a choice of two activities, "Search and Find" and "Brain Benders". For the Search and Find task, the recorded voice asks you to locate a particular object or person (for example, the man looking in the mirror who can be seen through one of the apartment windows)--use the special touch-sensitive pen that comes with the LeapPad system to press the appropriate area of the picture. The voice response enthusiastically praises correct answers and offers encouragement if you select an incorrect answer. The Search and Find tasks don't just test observation--reading and lateral thinking skills are also tested with problems such as "Touch the sign beginning with the letter c" or "Touch the sign that includes a word that contains the word land". The "Brain Benders" tasks give you a set time limit (usually 45 seconds) to locate several of the same item, although the child's understanding of the noun used is sometimes also tested, for example, "Find the three musicians in the picture". Maths skills and understanding of the concept of comparisons are also tested. For example, in a picture of a busy street scene, you're asked to compare the prices that two different hog dog vendors are selling their wares for and find the cheapest--is it one for 65 cents or two for 1 dollar and 20 cents?
The highly detailed pictures and requirement for lateral thinking makes Search The City a challenging interactive learning aid--even adult testers have concluded that it's not as easy as it looks. One minor criticism is that the some references such as prices haven't been changed for the British market, although the busy urban setting could just as easily be London as New York. Children familiar with Martin Handford's Where's Wally? series of books may have something of an advantage with the activities, as Search the City follows a similar format. --Alison Drury
