The Discovery Ball for babies of six months and upward is another innovative and invaluable learning toy from LeapFrog. As well as being great fun in itself, the ball is designed to familiarise babies with the alphabet at an early age, helping them begin to learn the letters and their sounds almost unconsciously, as they push on parts of the ball and hear it say a letter of the alphabet or sing a song related to that letter. Mounted on a solid stand which it can be spun on or detached from, theDiscovery Ball has squishy sides and a ribbon of buttons round the middle with letters of the alphabet to press. The ball has three fun interactive modes, letter, phonics and music. In the Letters mode, babies can press a letter to find out its name in upper case (A, B, C through to Z). In the Phonics mode, they can press the letters to hear its lower case primary phonics sound, (ah, buh, cuh). In both of these modes, when the Discovery Ball is moved it sings the ABC song and when the motion stops, so does the song, encouraging babies to keep it mobile. In the Music Mode, each of the 26 letters of the alphabet starts a different instrumental tune, from g for "Greensleeves" to r for "Row, row, row your boat" and there are so many to choose from that your baby will never get tired of pushing the buttons and hearing another tune. The volume control is a handy feature, with the "low" button, making all the speech and songs a little quieter, although still plenty loud enough for a child's enjoyment. Helpfully, the ball automatically switches off after 15 minutes of inactivity. This is a great fun toy with lots of learning potential. Age six months and over. Requires three AA batteries (batteries included for demonstration purposes only). --Rachel Ediss -

The Learning Drum from LeapFrog is a new innovation for babies of six months and over, introducing phonics and counting in an appropriate and fun way. It's a bold, bright and solid toy which is just right for the age for when babies reach that sitting up stage, and would otherwise be deriving pleasure from banging on your pots and pans.In each of the four modes, a tap on the top of the drum makes a drum sound and provokes a response in lights and speech or music.
In "abc" mode, the toy will provoke play with flashing lights and a cry of "Hi, lets play the drum--a, b, c" and each pat of the electronic "drum skin" brings a new letter up on display with accompanying speech, all the way from a to z if 26 pats are done in sequence. In this way, a baby's natural boisterous play is harnessed to develop unconscious learning of the alphabet and familiarisation with the shapes and sounds of the letters. The "123" mode likewise encourages repetitive pats to reveal more numbers in sequence, up to 10. In "drum" mode, babies are given a sequence of taps to copy and are complimented highly when they get it right, encouraging co-ordination through the use of rhythm. In "music" mode, the drum says "let's sing and play", appealing to babies to play the drum, this time with each pat producing a note and a different panel of lights to illuminate the drum skin.
Babies at the younger age of this age group may find it a challenge to always hit the drum hard enough to provoke the lights and sounds, but an encouraging extra hand will suffice and once the concept has been grasped there'll be lots of enthusiasm for play on their own. The on/off switch which also controls the modes of the drum is a bit sophisticated and fiddly for very little fingers and will probably be operated by older playmates.
Overall, this is a toy with lots of learning potential, and those whose little drummers find it too irresistible will be relieved that it also has that most welcome of features, a volume control. --Rachel Ediss

The circus is back in town for tiny tots. The musical Circus Stacker is a cute preschool stacking toy. An unusual combination of soft fabric animals on a plastic base mean that this is a very visually distinctive toy that will make a great gift for the toddler in your life.Lights and sounds enhance two modes of play. Mode one is "Learn" which teaches children the name, colour and size of the animals. Once all of the animals have been stacked correctly the quartet play a merry little circus tune. A slightly weaker mode two, "Music", involves each animal playing a musical instrument.
The secret parent weapon in this toy is a volume control hidden in the base to allow "quiet" play.
Supplied with demonstration batteries only, requires 3 AA batteries. Browse our full range of batteries for this and other toys. Contents may not exactly match the illustrations. (Suitable for children aged 12 months to 30 months). --Victoria Mackenzie
