  • LeapFrog Interactive Explorer Globe

    LeapFrog

    LeapFrog Interactive Explorer Globe
As learning aids go, they don't get much better than the Explorer Globe from LeapFrog. Touch the globe with the electronic pen included and it will spring to life, naming the country or ocean you've touched and giving you one or more of a number of facts--ocean depth (in feet and metres), country capital, population, land area, continent, even music (a rather eclectic mix!). Touch it again, and you'll get another nugget of information.

You can choose which information you want on precisely which area of the globe, from: name, capital, population, area, high point, money, music and continents/countries/states. The globe will also compare one place with another and tell you the distance in miles between them, if you touch two points in succession.

But the real potential of the globe lies in its game, "Eureka: a Game of Discovery". Touch the Eureka button, then choose from continents, countries, country capitals, states, state capitals or a free-for-all random round. Set the game going and you must find the points that the globe instructs you to find. You are running against the clock and the instructions and accompanying music become increasingly quicker as you progress. The multi-player option means healthy competition can be introduced and as you progress, you can choose between "tourist", "frequent flyer" and "globetrotter" levels, which become increasingly difficult.

The voice recording on the globe has an American accent but diction is clear and precise and in no way does this detract from the final product. This is a fast, furious and fun way to learn geography, (physical, human, political and economic as well as musical!) and though aimed at children, adults may be surprised at how healthy it is to do a little revision now and again. As well as being an effective learning aid, the globe can be a fun, family game. Simply superb and suitable for children aged 7 to 77! --Lucie Naylor

  • LeapFrog My First LeapPad

    LeapFrog

    LeapFrog My First LeapPad
My First LeapPad is a fun, interactive way to introduce first learning concepts to pre-school children and is aimed at those who are not old enough to appreciate the LeapPad Interactive Reading System.

Like the award-winning LeapPad before it, My First LeapPad is based around a software system that combines a "magic" pen with interactive books, in this case aimed at helping children recognise shapes, numbers, colours and first letters and words. The concept is simple enough: clip the "Leap's Big Day" book (included) on top of the First LeapPad, insert the cartridge into the station on its side, and press the green "Go" button. Each page has a different activity: choose from "Counting Farm", "Parts of the Body", "Count and Sing Express" and many, many more.

Visually exciting and very colourful, the illustrations are all self-contained, each centred around a situation that helps reinforce one or other first learning skill. For example, in "Parts of the Body", basic body parts are labelled, and if you press the "game" button, you are invited to press parts of the body while singing along to "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes". You can even choose a different body part for the song, and change the title! In "Leap Hopped on a Train", relatives are tested, as readers are asked to point with the magic pen to the item "under Leap's arm" or the person "standing next to Tad", and so on. When you get to the end, simply turn the book around, and instead of single exercises, you can follow a series of scenarios that together make a full story.

The music is lively, and volume is adjustable. The First LeapPad is bold, chunky and wipe-clean, and all wiring and batteries are well hidden behind screwed-down casing. A handy handle is just right for little fingers, and it even gives you a warning when your batteries are running out.

The "Leap's Big Day" book is also sturdy, made out of durable, wipe-clean cardboard and strong plastic binding. Though the unit is technologically quite complex, the learning principles behind My First LeapPad are traditionally simple, based on repetition, reinforcement and good old-fashioned fun! Parents will probably need to spend time helping and encouraging youngsters as they get to grips with the unit, and the only thing to remember is to press the green "Go" button each time you turn a page.

Recent research has shown that the younger a child is exposed to letters and numbers, the earlier they will begin to learn how to count and write. My First LeapPad is undoubtedly a learning aid that will foster this progression and give your children a helping hand as they set out to learn. The only additional thing you will need is a backpack or bag to store the books, unit and cartridges safely together. --Susan Naylor

Aimed at pre-readers, the manufacturers recommend My First LeapPad for children aged 3 years and above. Requires 4 x AA batteries (not supplied).

Also available: Pooh's Honey Tree – My First LeapPad Interactive Book.

    LeapFrog

LeapFrog Search The City - LeapPad Interactive Book
Search The City is part of LeapFrog's range of interactive books that are designed to be used with their LeapPad Learning System. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and you're ready to start.

This particular title is recommended for children at Stage 3 of the LeapPad library, which is children between eight and 10 years old. The background story linking the learning activities on each page is that of two characters, Tanna and Santo, who arrange to meet when Tanna visits the big city for the first time. Because of the crowds in all the locations they visit (the airport, the museum and the department store being just some of them), they keep missing each other. Santo leaves a note for Tanna at each location indicating where she should go to next.

Each page of the book features a different setting and a choice of two activities, "Search and Find" and "Brain Benders". For the Search and Find task, the recorded voice asks you to locate a particular object or person (for example, the man looking in the mirror who can be seen through one of the apartment windows)--use the special touch-sensitive pen that comes with the LeapPad system to press the appropriate area of the picture. The voice response enthusiastically praises correct answers and offers encouragement if you select an incorrect answer. The Search and Find tasks don't just test observation--reading and lateral thinking skills are also tested with problems such as "Touch the sign beginning with the letter c" or "Touch the sign that includes a word that contains the word land". The "Brain Benders" tasks give you a set time limit (usually 45 seconds) to locate several of the same item, although the child's understanding of the noun used is sometimes also tested, for example, "Find the three musicians in the picture". Maths skills and understanding of the concept of comparisons are also tested. For example, in a picture of a busy street scene, you're asked to compare the prices that two different hog dog vendors are selling their wares for and find the cheapest--is it one for 65 cents or two for 1 dollar and 20 cents?

The highly detailed pictures and requirement for lateral thinking makes Search The City a challenging interactive learning aid--even adult testers have concluded that it's not as easy as it looks. One minor criticism is that the some references such as prices haven't been changed for the British market, although the busy urban setting could just as easily be London as New York. Children familiar with Martin Handford's Where's Wally? series of books may have something of an advantage with the activities, as Search the City follows a similar format. --Alison Drury
